2009 Scholarship Announcement



The West Michigan Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association is pleased to announce the availability of up to five (5) $1,500.00 scholarships to be awarded to students pursuing a career in environmental protection.

Each applicant will receive a one year student AWMA membership.

NAME:  West Michigan Chapter Air & Waste Management Association Environmental Scholarship


PURPOSE: 
To provide financial support to students studying for a career in air pollution control, hazardous waste management or other environmental area.

ELIGIBILITY:

1. Geographic area

     a)  Applicants attending any accredited college or university in the State of Michigan and
     b)WMAWMA Chapter Members and their children who are pursing an environmentally related degree, or whose studies include an environmental concentration, at an accredited college or university located within or outside the State of Michigan.

2. Academic level or major
     a)  At the start of the term for which the scholarship is sought, applicants must be attending full time and pursuing a course of study leading to a career in air pollution control, hazardous waste
         management or other environmental area. Preferred      courses of study include environmental engineering, physical or natural sciences, or natural resources. If in doubt as to the suitability of a
        curriculum or course of study, contact the Scholarship Chairperson by letter.
     b)
  Applicants must be in or going into a Junior or Senior undergraduate class standing and have declared their major, or in or going into Graduate School pursing a Master's degree.
     c)
  Merit will be of primary interest, and the applicant should have at least a "B" average, i.e., 3.0 on a 4.0 honor point scale. Extra curricular activities and interests will also be considered.

CONDITIONS AND RENEWALS:

This is a scholarship of $1,500.00 per student. The scholarship will be awarded on or before January 31, 2009, for use in the next semester. The check will be made out in the name of the student and the university or college, and may be used only for tuition, books, laboratory fees, or other expenditures for academic purposes. 

The award is for one year. An unsuccessful applicant may resubmit an application for a subsequent year. A successful applicant may also resubmit an application for another year, assuming the scholarship is continued.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

The applicant must submit the following, the entire package being submitted either electronically, or via hard copy:

1. A paper of between 500 and 600 words reflecting interests and objectives. This will be of primary interest to the scholarship panel.

2. Identify activities involved in that support A&WMA goals e.g., student chapter.

3. The name of a professor, academic advisor or department chair who has agreed to provide a recommendation for the applicant, and who can confirm the applicant’s course of study and verify academic status.

4. A resume showing all full and part-time employment since high school graduation and while in college, semesters with dates of attendance, and extra-curricular activities listed in chronological order.

5. A copy of transcripts of college work (an "official transcript" is not required, but the GPA is subject to verification by the University.)

6. Each applicant must send all the required items with a cover letter. All entries must be post-marked or E-mailed on or before December 1, 2008. None will be returned. The cover letter should include a brief summary of your application submittal.

SELECTION:

The entries will be evaluated by a panel representing the diverse membership of A&WMA: industry, government, education, and law. If, in the opinion of the panel, suitable entries are not received, no scholarship will be awarded. In all cases, the decision of the panel will be final.


FUNDING:

The funding will be provided from the general funds of the West Michigan Chapter of A&WMA which are derived from membership fees and corporate sponsorships.
